In this article, I will cover things you should know before starting a blog and setting up a blog for success. There is a complete guide in starting a blog for beginners. These are all key elements in starting a successful blog.

Blogging is one of the best ways to make an extra and passive recurring income once you have everything set up for success from the start. Things you should know before starting a blog is that blogging takes time to grow, you need to be focused and put on effort, choose a low but profitable niche, choose a domain that reflects your niche, planning and organizing blog topics, and many more.

We will dive deeper into all of the must-know things before starting a blog as we go on.

Setting up your blog for success is the pillar of everything. There are quite a handful of things you need to know and do to set up your blog. These include niche research, domain name, web hosting, and email autoresponder.

First and foremost is doing your research to know what niche you will be blogging about. Remember to choose a niche that is not very competitive especially when starting.

  • Google keyword planner
  • Google Trends
  • Ubersuggest

If you cannot think of a niche or is a bit confuse about what niche to start, then think of something you like to do, hobbies, skills, sports, etc. Then you can niche down these broad topics using the free tools mentioned above.

What do you need to start a blog?

  • Chosen niche. Choose a low competitive niche unless you are an experienced blogger and have built an authority then you can go for a very competitive niche.
  • Domain name. If possible go for a domain name with .com, this should be your first option. Try to register a domain name that is not too long, but easy to remember and that it conveys the message of what your niche is all about.
  • Choose a web hosting site like Blue host, Wix, etc.
  • Install WordPress plugins.
  • Design and customize your website.
  • Create and design your logo. You can easily design your logo on Canva, it’s free and beginner user friendly.
  • Write and publish your first blog post.

Ok, I know these may seem a lot and well, yeah actually it is but does not be overwhelmed, as all of these things are doable. You do not need to be an expert to start a blogging business. You will become an expert along the way. Trust me, I have been through this!

Setting up your blog for success includes setting up an email sign-up form, or an autoresponder for your email list. During your planning phase, you should have included a goal for your blog to collect emails.

Why is an email list important? 

  • Capturing emails of every possible visitor on your site.
  • Reconnecting or getting in touch with your readers.
  • Set up email sequences so you can do email marketing.
  • Your email list is your organic traffic. You have full control over what to do and sell on that email list.

Only a few readers or visitors who visited your site will remember it and will go back to your site. The first thing you should have set up is a pop-up to collect emails. You might have heard from others not to do pop-ups to collect emails, but this is one way you can get a first-time website visitor to a subscriber and a repeat visitor to your site.

The email list pop-up form strategy that has worked best for me is configuring pop-ups to show after the visitor has stayed for a while on your site or when the visitor tends to hover exit.

I am not a fan of pop-up showing on my face the first few seconds I am on a site. Also, of course, your reader needs to know your blog first and have somewhat knowledge if your blog is a fit for what he or she is looking for.

It is hard to get the trust of first-time visitors on your site so reconnecting with them through emails will work so you can easily do email marketing.

How to get your readers sign-up to your opt-in page?

  • Give them a giveaway. Giveaway products may be in the form of ebooks. Ebooks are a great option because subscribers can easily download them right away.
  • A coupon.
  • Access to free training (related to your niche)
  • Free membership
  • and many more

You can easily set up newsletters, giveaways, free downloads, etc to entice your readers to give their emails in exchange for something they want and need from you or your site.

Tools and software like Getresponse and Groovefunnels (Groovepages) will do the magic for your email list collection and growth, landing pages and so much more.

So do not forget to set up an email opt-in form on your blog from the start even when you do not have traffic yet.

Below are the lists of the top 7 blog post types that are worth writing about. These types of blog posts will keep your readers longer on your site and will get them to subscribe to your site.

1. “How to”… blog post

People search for how to… because they need an answer to something, they want to learn something. How to… type of blog post is a popular one that you can start writing about especially on your first few blogs.

2. The listicle blog post.

The listicle blog post is also known as the list type articles. You are listing different things here that readers want to know. List type post is popular for readers because it is like a summarized blog with a numbered or list of things and is an easy read for the readers.

This is a quick and easy way for readers to find what they want to know.

So yeah, listicle blogs work and will let your reader hover down to your last list!

3. Case study blog post.

The case study blog post is not for every topic. Some topics are best presented in a case study type post while other topics don’t. If your niche and topic are suited for a case study blog post then do so.

You can write a case study blog post about your experiments, tests, and other experiences related to your niche.

  • Inspirational and motivational. 
    •  People love evidence or real-life experiences and find inspiration in it. You are presenting possibilities that they can do this too (whatever case study you are showing).

This is like a combination of “how-to” posts, listicle posts, and faq post. A guide blog post is a very good pillar post to start. Guide blog posts is an in-depth and complete post about something.

When writing a guide blog post, be sure to tackle everything, that you are showing a complete guide. The guide blog post is long, detailed, and complete articles so the readers want to read it because they are getting everything they need to know.

Getting organic traffic to your blog entails a connection of many things like SEO optimization, quality blog posts, topic or niche competitiveness, and many more.

So when you did your research niche, keyword research, written a quality blog post, your site is running fast on both desktop and mobile then let your blog work for itself. What you will do now is to drive more traffic and gain initial traction to your blog.

Free or organic traffic sources for your website.

So while waiting for your blog to rank organically, you can push more traffic using these platforms.

1. Quora.   

  • Go to forums like Quora
  • Search questions related to your blog or niche
  • Provide a quality answer and link it to your blog
  • Don’t just drop a link, you will get banned!

2. Pinterest.

  • Sign-up for a business account. It’s FREE.
  • Create and pin rich quality pins that link to your post
  • Join group boards related to your niche

Medium is a good way to start driving free traffic to your site. All you have to do is write a shorter quality blog version of what your article is all about and link it to your site if they want to know more about that certain topic. This is free, you just need to sign-up.

4. YouTube

Ok, I get it, Not everyone wants to show their faces on YouTube or create a channel on YouTube, but if your website or niche is best for people who are in YuoTube then do so, if not, you can skip this YouTube thing.

5. Email list.

Remember I mentioned earlier to set up an email list opt-in page, well this is the time you will be using this. Of course, you cannot use this when your blog is fresh and new but after a while of driving traffic and collecting emails, after a few months you can do a newsletter and let your subscribers know that you have a new blog post that they might want to read.

6. Social media

Other traffic sources you can set up are your social media like the Facebook page, Instagram, Tiktok, etc.

Your social media presence is important to your business but you do not need to be everywhere. You can choose a social media that is best suited to your niche and be a master of it.

Niche research, planning, domain, website set-up, quality blog posts are all important factors on how to set up your blog for success as a beginner. Well, don’t forget the proper mindset that I have talked about in my previous blog.

Creating a blogging business to earn extra income online is not an overnight success, contrary to what people say to you. Unlike affiliate marketing, dropshipping, and other online business, blogging is a slow but sure path in creating an online income.

So from the start, keep your mindset that blogging is not an easy way to make money online but is it is one of the best ways to make an extra passive income online. It will take time before you can see a blog grow, the secret of success in the blogging business is to stay consistent, publish quality articles. Initially, you need at least 10 to 20 blog posts and months before you can see initial traffic and growth on your site.

If you do not know what to write at first you can easily search Google search bars and see what people are typing on the search box and use forums and see what people are asking.

After setting up properly your web site, themes did some research on your topics then you can write your initial 10-20 posts to get things started.
