How to start a blog for free and make extra income online?

  1. Research for a Niche: How to find a blog niche?
    • Planning and research are key in starting a successful blog.
    • Know who are your target audience or readers.
    • What are you good at that you are willing to write about and share.
    • Who do you want to help?
    • What products do you want to promote (affiliate marketing)?
    • What are people searching for? What do readers want to know about?

These are all free tools you can use to help you find keywords for your Niche.

  1. Google Trends – Google trends is a free tool where you can type a keyword and check keyword trends.
  2. AnswerthePublic- With answer the public, you can get tons of ideas of what people are searching for. There are many keywords and questions you can start with by using this website.
  3. Exploding Topics- This is a free keyword tool to check topics that are exploding and hot topics people are searching for. They have different niches to choose a topic from. Although the free tool has limited searches per day, still it is a good one to start with.
  4. Quora- Quora is a forum where people go to ask questions or find answers. Check Quora forums and you can get an idea of what people are asking and what people are talking about.
  5. Ubersuggest- Ubersuggest has a lot of features for beginners to use for free and to start getting ideas by typing keywords related to your niche you want to write about. Just like exploding topics, Ubersuggests free tool has a limited search per day.
  6. is not typical keyword research but you can check websites that are ranking in different niches. This is a good way to see ranking sites and see what they are doing so you can do better than them.

2. Build your website.

I know that our topic is starting a blog for free, but if you want to own your own website, then at least invest in buying your own domain and hosting it on platforms like Bluehost and Wix.

But if you really do not have small money to buy your domain and host in a hosting platform, then you can create a blog on or create your website for free on Google sites.

Take note that creating articles on means you cannot be monetized that article for third-party advertisements, unlike when you own a domain and host it on hosting platforms like Bluehost, then you own that site, you can monetize it in any way you want.

3. Create your blog post.

Since our topic is creating a blog business for free, then I would have expected that you are willing to write your own blog posts. This is like trading time for money. If you have free time then you can write your own blog post.

Try to create a plan as to when you are going to write, how many blog posts are you going to publish, etc. It is best to create a plan and a goal so it is easier to stay on track.

You do not need to be an expert writer or a journalist to create a blog post, there are apps that you can use for free to check grammar errors, punctuations, and many more.

The one I am using is a free grammar checker called GRAMMARLY. Grammarly is a free grammar checker, they have a pro plan if you want to access more of their features, but to start with, you can use the free version unlimited, I mean you can use Grammarly’s free version forever if you want to.

You can easily download Grammarly on Google extension, or on your phone. It is very easy to use. Check it here.

Now that you have created a blog post, then it is time to add some images. Visuals work very well with readers are compared to boring plain texts.

Add some eye-catching images on your blog, you can use the FREE CANVA version to start with. Canva’s free version is a good start. Not just on stock images but you can create blog posts images and other social media posts on Canva. You can read more about Canva here.

4. Promote your blog post.

Now that you have created a blog post, it is time to drive traffic, you can do this by creating eye-catching Pinterest pins and pinning them on your board.

Aside from the SEO organic traffic that you will be getting on search engines if you have done proper SEO research and optimized your blog for the search engines, then you can also drive traffic to your website through Pinterest and other social media platforms.

You can use, Canva to create Pinterest pins. Signing up for Pinterest and creating a business account is free. So go ahead and check it for yourself, if you are new to Pinterest then you can read my previous blog here.

How to create a successful blog for free and earn money?

Now that you have an idea on how to start a blog for free and yes it is possible to start a blog for free then let’s focus on monetizing your website or your blog.

How to make money with blogging?

  1. Third-party ads

When a blog is well optimized for search engines, meaning you did your research for keywords, you focused on that keywords and you targeted preferably long-tail keywords, then organic traffic will come on your site. You can connect your site to third-party advertisements like Google ads, Ezoic, and the like.

As of writing, you can now connect a new website to EZOIC, as Ezoic has removed their minimum traffic requirements so you can monetize on the traffic from day one. Just apply on Ezoic.

2. Affiliate Marketing.

Many bloggers make money through affiliate marketing. Meaning, you find a product you want to talk about or want to promote, link it in your blog and when they buy through your link, you will get a certain commission.

There are many affiliate platforms you can apply to or find products like Amazon, Clickbank, ShareASale, Maxbounty, and many more.

Take note that you need to apply on the said affiliate marketing platforms and some are not available in other geographical regions so make sure to do your research on this.

There is a lot to talk about affiliate marketing so if you want to do affiliate marketing with just a minimal budget then check this free webinar.

3. Merch Products.

You can start a blog and promote your own product. If you have merch products on Amazon or Etsy, then you can promote them in your blog. You can also connect your blog to your products if you have digital or print on demand products, then you can make money by connecting your blog and your products together.

4. Product Promotions.

If you are getting good and consistent traffic to your blog or website, then some companies can contact you directly for sponsorship. Meaning you write about them or their product for an agreed amount by doing that. A website with good traffic is doing direct sponsorship or promotions on its website.

5. Selling Websites.

Yes, you can make money by creating and selling websites. You can sell a website you started if you think you are not going to continue with that site. But you cannot do this is you do not own and host your domain.

How soon can you make money blogging?

You have come a long way now, and the question is how long does it take to make money after you publish your blog? You might not like the answer, but it depends.

Some blogs easily take off after a month, but most probably most websites take off after 6 months. But you can make money from day one as I have said you can put ads on your website even it is a brand new site as Ezoic has removed the minimum traffic requirement.

The thing is you need more traffic to make money through advertisements depending on the niche you are in. Cost per click and cost per acquisition varies in every niche and sub-niches. So basically you can make pennies with ads on small traffic to your brand new site, but as time goes by and traffic builds up, then you can see bigger results.

If you are in a small niche and did a proper SEO on your blog, then search engines can pick up your site sooner as compared to a website that is in a very competitive niche.

But take note, as I have said earlier that blogging is a long-term business, just don’t give up and keep on writing and publishing posts then you will see results.

But it is a time like a year or more before you can have a decent income on blogging. Unless you are one of the few with a very good niche and a very good blog post then you can make money sooner.

Can you create a passive income through blogging?

The next thought you have in your mind might be can you create a passive income through blogging?

The answer is Yes, Yes if you did a good job from the start as it is the basic foundation of your site. If you did your keyword research and are consistent in publishing posts then you can create a passive income through blogging.

The thing is, it is not totally passive, as you have to create and publish new content consistently, but I mean passive because your old posts will always be there getting traffics and clicks and making an extra income for you.

So yes, blogging is partly a passive income resource and partly an active income resource.

If you are thinking if blogging is a good passive income, then for me it is a yes. Blogging requires a lot to start with, from building a site, to writing and publishing blog posts, but the reward comes at the end. Just be consistent and write good helpful articles for your readers to read then you will be found on search engines. Those traffic or readers means money for you. So yes, for me blogging is a good source of extra online income.

How will I know if blogging is for me?

  • Blogging is for you if you are a person who does not want to wait long for results.
  • Blogging is not for you if first and foremost, you are not interested in learning how to blog.
  • Blogging is not for you if you do not want to invest anything.
  • Blogging is not for you if you want a magic button for success.
  • Blogging is not for you if you do not want to read, write or learn.

In general, blogging is not for you if you are not willing to invest time and money. Put on work now and harvest the fruit later. But if you are pessimistic about everything, sorry this is not for you.

Is it possible to start a blog for free? Yes, it is but if you want to create a long-term business then at least invest a little on hosting platforms like Bluehost, Wix, and the like. You can start a blog and do the work by yourself like trading time for money or you can trade money for time.

As mentioned above, with minimal investment, you can buy a domain and host it on Bluehost or Wix. You can start a blog and make money by monetizing your site by connecting ads, adding affiliate links, direct sponsorship, or selling merch items on your site. There are countless ways to make money through blogging.

Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme so you need to make a concrete plan on writing and publishing very good content that is helpful to the readers. It may take time before your website or your blog will take off, but just be consistent and willing to put on the work before you can see end results as time goes by.

Is blogging for everyone? No! If you are the person who is not willing to wait for results if you do not want to invest time, money, and effort then this is not for you.
